What Is Safed Musli?
is a tonic herb used in India to boost strength and endurance, to enhance the immune system, and to treat arthritis, diabetes, and prenatal and postnatal problems.
In India interest in safed musli has grown enormously because of the herb’s aphrodisiac effects. The tubers are used to help men who suffer from impotence and premature ejaculation, and are used even to treat infertility in both men and women.
Few products containing safed musli are sold in India and on the Internet.
Safed musli is a native herb found in the understories of forests in India. Of the 13 species of Chlorophytum native to India, C. borivilianum is the most important for medicinal use and is the one commonly sold as safed musli.
Overharvesting has threatened wild stands to the point where the Indian government is actively encouraging farmers to cultivate safed musli to meet the growing demand.
Called the “wonder crop”, interest is high among Indian farmers to grow it fanned by promises of huge returns. Although Indian government figures indicate a continued shortfall in supply, the gap between supply and demand is beginning to fall.
But compared to most crops safed musli still offers attractive rates of return. A kilogram of tubers planted will yield a harvest of 6-8 kilograms of fresh tubers.
Safed musli is too tender to grow as a field crop in temperate zones. It must be grown under protection in all areas of North America except southern Florida.
It has potential as a house plant because it is shade and drought tolerant and adapts well to container growing.
As you believe that a market for container-grown safed musli will emerge in North America once the plant’s aphrodisiac properties become better known.
Indian Cultivation Practices Of Safed Musli
So far safed musli is only grown field crop in India. It is grown in raised beds, deep ploughed two or three times and enriched with farmyard manure or compost before planting.
Before the monsoons arrive, tubers are planted in rows 15-20 cm (3-4″) apart and the same distance apart within rows. Tubers are treated with goumutra (cow’s urine) before planting, possibly to protect against fungal infection, the main pest management problem that this crop may encounter.
It takes 400-500 kilograms of live tubers to plant an acre (1000-1100 per hectare).
Weed control is usually by hand. Fungicides may be applied to control fungal infection.
The flowers must be removed in order to promote tuber growth.
Harvesting occurs in February or March, 8-9 months after planting. Tubers are dug by hand, washed and disinfected to prevent mould. Many growers peel the skin off with a special knife, but some herbalists believe that there is no advantage to removing the skin.
The tubers are then dried down to about 25% of their wet weight. The dried “fingers” are then graded and packed.
