As compared to yesteryears, people today are more prone to health issues like blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, obesity, and many other which then were treated as small issues.
Though treatable health conditions, but they affect every part of your organ in a negative way.
Every other person we meet today is suffering from diabetes and if this slow poison is left unmonitored then it would cause an ill effect on your body as well as your organs especially kidney, eye and heart.
When one talks about diabetes, the first question that comes to our minds is – How does one get diabetes?
There are three major areas you need to understand about this disease. Firstly, our body needs glucose to function properly. The glucose or sugar in the blood is actually the element that is derived from the food you ingest. If, in any case, the blood sugar levels or the glucose in the blood increases in excess, you get diabetes.
Diabetes is a health condition which has no permanent cure and if you are suffering from it, then you will have to struggle with it for your whole life.
Don’t be scared knowing that there is no permanent cure. There are ways which will help you maintain your diabetes within the reference range and help you control it.
Here are a few ways that you can consider while coping up with diabetes.
Stay in Contact with your Health Practitioner
If you suspect that you are suffering from diabetes then the first step you should take is to consult your health practitioner or a diabetes specialist. You should inform the doctor about all your health related issues and should also be aware of the symptoms of diabetes. You should frequently check your blood sugar level and if you are suspicious about any fluctuations in its rise and fall then do visit your doctor.
Type of Diabetes
If you think that you have diabetes then you should ask your doctor about the type of diabetes. One should have knowledge about all the types of diabetes and its causes and symptoms. If you feel that any symptom of the various types of diabetes is experienced by you then you should get yourself diagnosed and alter your lifestyle accordingly.
Here is an overview of the three types of diabetes –
More commonly known as Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus or Juvenile diabetes. In this type of diabetes, it mainly occurs in children and young adults, and here the beta cells of pancreas are unable to produce enough insulin required by the body and thus, in these type of diabetes, it is required to inject insulin in the body.
Also known as NonInsulin dependent diabetes, in this type of diabetes, the cells resist the insulin generated in the body for some reason.
Earlier this type of diabetes was commonly seen in adults and hence it was called Adult-Onset, however nowadays it can be commonly seen in children as well and is simply called as Type 2 diabetes.
When a person suffers from non-insulin dependent diabetes, the beta cells in the body make the insulin but the cells fail to respond to such insulin thus rejecting the absorption. This results in a condition called insulin resistance. This type of diabetes mainly affects obese people.
People who have a family history of diabetes are also at a risk of getting NIDDM (noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitu). Treatments for this type of diabetes usually require oral hypoglycemic agents firstly and then, if required further, it is treated with drugs.
More commonly known as Gestational Diabetes, this is a condition that occurs in some women when they are in the later stages of their pregnancy. When an expecting mother without diabetic history is diagnosed with high blood sugar levels, she suffers from gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs when the expecting mother suffers from hormonal imbalance.
In such cases, not only is the mother at a high risk of getting diabetes but even the child who is born in such conditions is also at a risk of getting diabetes later on in life.
Healthy and Controlled Diet
Diabetes is a health condition where the sugar levels in your body increase to an unexpected level and eventually harms your body and its organs if not controlled.
But if you have just found out about your condition and it is not that serious then you can control it by managing your diet. There is a particular diet chart prepared for diabetic people and they should make sure to follow it to get cured of this condition.
In certain situations, change in your health and lifestyle has no effect on your diabetes. In these cases, you are given insulin and strong oral medication so that your diabetes is controlled before it does any harm.
However before taking any medication associated with diabetes you should make sure you know everything about the medication, how to consume it and whether it interacts with any other medication you are on or not.
Your health practitioner will guide you through it and give you the right kind of dose.
Stay Close to Loved Ones
Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean that you need to isolate yourself from the society. It does not weaken you in any way for the day to day activities.
All you need to do is to control it through meticulous diet and medication. You should inform your relatives and friends about it and not feel shameful at all as it is a simple condition that can be treated and controlled with proper medication and diet.
Your friends and relatives can guide you on how to control it and help you cope up with diabetes making your life more healthy and strong.
Diabetes is one such health condition that requires commitment and dedication in order to cure it and in some cases get rid of it completely.
Since it has no permanent treatment, it is a condition which needs to be monitored closely while following a proper diet and exercise plan along with the medications prescribed by the doctors.
